Queensland manufacturing capacity by region - September Quarter 2008

The Industry Capability Network (Queensland) is funded by the Queensland Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry to report quarterly on key Queensland suppliers’ capacity to assist in providing more factual information to project owners and procurement managers.

The latest assessment was carried out in September 2008 and is usually valid for about three months. For the September Quarter 2008, the capacity of 120 Queensland (Large and SME) companies representing a capacity of about 380,000 tonnes of fabricated steel annually were assessed. These companies represent a significant proportion of Queensland’s fabrication capacity. The results are in the graph and show that the light, medium and heavy fabrication and precision engineering companies surveyed have 18% or 68,400 tonnes of spare fabrication capacity across the State a decrease of 3% from the previous survey. The region with the least available capacity is the far North Queensland whilst the Fitzroy Region has the greatest free capacity. A number of companies have reported that they will be at capacity until Christmas, but as yet do not have orders for 2009; other companies have reported that they are currently well below capacity.
